Glossary of Summer Camp Terms

While searching for a summer camp you may come across any or more of the following camp terms, we're compiling a comprehensive index of summer camp terminology, so if you would like to request a word, simply drop us an email to info@campsearch.com.

Camper
The actual child participating in the camp program. This represents 1 person. Male or female.


Camp Director
The camp director is usually the general manager of camp operations overseeing most aspects of the camp program, activity execution and enrollment. Although you may or may not speak directly with the camp director, all camps employ one senior director to oversee operations.

Activity
Any activity at camp from swimming to rock climbing to pottery to performing arts. You name it, there is a camp out there that has an activity your camper will be interested in.

Cabin
A group of campers. A cabin can be as small as 5 campers and as large as 20. In a residential camp campers are grouped together in same sex / same age categories. Within day camp environments campers may be grouped in same sex same age categories or in coeducational groups depending on the camp philosophy.

Unit
A group of cabins. A unit of campers generally consists of all cabins within a specific age group. Units are generally named and themed.

Camp Wide
Camp Wide refers to all units. This incorporates every unit (and therefore) every camper in camp.

Fun
This refers to the amount of fun you'll have at camp!
