What types of camps are out there?

Day Camps operate for periods of 1 day to eight weeks providing opportunities for children to sleep at home while enjoying a camp experience during the day. Transportation and supervision to the campsite may or not be included in the camp fee. Day camps cater to mainstream campers, offer programs to those with special needs, or integrated programs for both types of campers. Always speak to the camp director before attending camp.

Residential Camps, often called overnight, or sleep away camps, operate over a variety of time periods ranging from a few days up to several weeks. Accommodation and food service arrangements vary: dormitories, serviced cabins, rustic shelters, tents, customized menus, cafeteria-style service, catered food service, etc. Activities vary widely with the camp's philosophy, budget, and physical environment. Always speak to the camp director before attending camp.

Specialty Camps operate as either a day camp or residential camp, and sometimes both. A specialty camp can be very specific in it's programming placing special emphasis on one particular activity (i.e. Tennis Camp). Specialty camps usually have facilities and staffing, (and experience) to handle campers with physical, mental, developmental or emotional needs. Always speak to the camp director.

Focused Programs, operating as either day or residential. Focused programs offer very rigid and specific activities. For example, an equestrian camp may offer a very focused program revolving around equestrian riding. Similarly a golf camp, day or residential will clearly offer a structured golf program, for adults and/or children campers. Always speak to the camp director before attending camp.

Outdoor Education. Outdoor education programs are often offered at or through Outdoor Recreation facilities. These programs usually revolve around learning and knowledge of the Outdoors. Education centers often cater to large groups including schools, day care, and day camps. Outdoor Education centers often make excellent retreats for business. Tours and Adventures often called "Teen tours" can be either "day" or "residential" in nature. Transportation is usually a cost incorporated into the fee. They operate from periods of 1 day, up to several weeks. Always speak to the camp director before attending camp.

Family Camps often operate either year-round or seasonal facilities ideal for family vacationing. Accommodations and food service vary. Programming and activities are suitable for people of all ages, from junior to senior. Always speak to the camp director before attending camp.
