American Flag Wall Hanging

By: Amanda Formaro

Difficulty: Easy

Age: 7 and up

Average User Rating:

What you'll need:

  • 8.5" x 11" sheet of card stock or cardboard
  • 1 sheet white felt
  • ¼ sheet of blue felt
  • 1 sheet red felt
  • Small paintbrush
  • White acrylic craft paint
  • Blue chenille stem
  • Tape
  • White craft glue
  • scissors

How to make it:

  1. Glue white sheet of felt to the cardstock or cardboard, covering it completely.
  2. Trim blue felt rectangle for the star background of the flag. Glue to upper left-hand corner of the white felt.
  3. The American flag has seven red stripes and six white stripes. Four of the red stripes and three of the white stripes are in line with the blue rectangle, and the rest are full length stripes. Cut stripes from red felt, measuring approximately 1 ½ - 1 ¾ inches wide.
  4. Glue red stripes on to the flag, following our photo as a guide.
  5. The American flag has 50 stars. Dip the handle end of your paintbrush into the white paint and dot on the stars following this pattern: Make the first set of 30 stars by painting six across and five down. Leave space between the lines so you have enough room to add the second set. Make the second set of 20 by dotting five across and four down. Use our photo as a guide.
  6. When dry, turn the flag over and tape a chenille stem to the back as a hanger.
  7. Trim all edges of the flag so that everything is even.

Tips:

  • For smaller children, let them dot the stars on however is easiest. Or, you may want to draw on small pencil marks first to use as a guide.
  • Use a ruler to measure the flag. Then divide that length by 13 to get the approximate width of the stripes.
  • If you would like to get even more creative, use sequins as the stars and glue each in place on the blue felt.
