Kids' First Aid Kit

Prepare for emergencies and teach your kids about safety as you make your own first aid kit from a plastic lunch box. Essential for road trips, scouting or camping.

What you'll need:

  • Red plastic lunch box
  • All-purpose cleaner (recommended: Citrus Magic)
  • Metal putty knife or other straight edge
  • Inkjet full page label (see tips for other suggestions)
  • Self-adhesive laminating sheets (recommended: Con-Tact paper)
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pen (to draw cutting lines on label & adhesive paper)
  • First Aid supplies for kit (see suggestions below)

How to make it:

  1. Print pattern below for First Aid sticker: (Print one  for each side of lunch box) Click here.
  2. Tear the label off of the red lunch box.
  3. Spray the remaining label with an all-purpose cleaner (recommended: Citrus Magic).
  4. Use the metal putty knife to scrape off the remaining label.
  5. Wash and dry the lunch box.
  6. Cut the labels to fit the lunch box.
  7. Attach label to front and back of the red lunch box.
  8. Cut self-adhesive laminating paper slightly larger than the sticker.
  9. Apply self-adhesive laminating paper to the labels. Be sure to press firmly around the edges to keep moisture away from the label.
  10. Decide on a place to keep your First Aid kit. Make sure everyone knows where it is kept.


Fill your first aid kit with the following suggested items:

  • Box of assorted sizes of adhesive bandages
  • 1" bandage
  • 2" bandage
  • Package of sterile gauze
  • Sterile non-stick bandages
  • Ipecac syrup
  • Anti-biotic ointment
  • Ace wrap (elastic bandage)
  • Small sharp scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Adhesive tape
  • Needles
  • Matches
  • Hydrocortisone cream
  • Benadryl cream or antibiotic ointment
  • Disposable instant cold pack
  • Alcohol swabs
  • Plastic gloves
  • Emergency phone numbers (doctor, hospital, and poison control)

 

Tips:

You can also just use cardstock and draw on your picture and write the words "First Aid". Use double-stick tape to adhere to the lunch box and cover with clear adhesive paper (recommended: Con-Tact paper).
