Make a decorative container for extra toilet paper storage. An old coffee can and a few other decorative elements found around the house are all you need. Makes a fun craft out of recycled goods that can be given as a gift.
What you'll need:
- Three empty two-pound size coffee cans
- One plastic lid that fits the cans
- Washable wallpaper or Con-Tact paper that will coordinate with the room's decor
- Glue
- Scissors
- Miscellaneous items for decorating: silk flowers, doily, ribbons, etc.
- Sturdy Shipping Tape
- Can opener
- Pair of pliers
- Four standard size rolls of Tissue Paper.
How to make it:
- Remove the bottoms from two of the cans with your can opener. Do not remove the bottom on the third can.
- Make sure there are no sharp edges for scratching or cutting hands.
- Use the pliers to help bend in sharp jagged metal edges.
- Carefully tape each edge of each can for extra protection.
- Stack the two open-ended cans on top of the can with the bottom still in it (bottom sides down).
- Tape each adjoining edge together by wrapping tape all the way around each joint on the outside of the cans and also on the inside of the cans. (Make sure you do a smooth wrap on the taping and test to make sure the lid fits.)
- Cut your washable wallpaper or Con-Tact paper to fit around the stack of cans. It is better to have it in one piece and edges of paper can overlap so be generous with your cutting. (approximately 19 1/4" X 16 1/2")
- Glue the paper around the stack of cans securely.
- Decorate the plastic lid by gluing on a piece of matching paper cut to the size of the lid.
- Silk flowers, ribbons, a crocheted doily, etceteras may be glued to the top of the plastic lid, if desired.
- Put four rolls of tissue paper into the holder.
