Description:

BABIL is a French program to teach young children letter and word recognition, basic numbers, addition, logic and spatial orientation. There is also an arcade game (click on Jeu), shooting at shapes, but it is a bit slow.

>From the main screen, click on Babil to access 15 different exercises. You have to double click on each symbol (not the word under it) to activate it. Complete each exercise and then click on the bear to verify the answer.

The first 5 deal with letter and word identification in texts. One nice feature is that the number of appearances in the text is shown and is decreased with each correct identification. There are also exercises in reconstituting words from their syllables.

The next 5 are exercises in number recognition and addition. There is good visual reinforcement by grouping of blobs in a circle to match a number. Addition shows numbers using fingers of a hand.

The last 5 exercises deal with logic and orientation. Complete a sequence of shapes, rebuild pyramids by ordering the layers with the longest at the bottom, re-create a shape, and drive a car home by changing directions at the right spots (turn left, right or move straight ahead with the up arrow).

There is a lot to do in this program both for young children who know the French language and for older kids learning it (for the latter the math and logic exercises would be too easy). The sound quality is poor, but kids' voices speak the words with good accents. The interface is a little awkward but worth it for the great content!
