MICROSCOPES, CELLS, DNA AND YOU, by Roger Bumgarner, University of Washington

Download lesson plans in Microsoft Word 6.0. These cover science activities in use of microscopes, optics, investigation of cells and DNA. For example, in 'The Green Onion - Eye and 5X', draw a picture of an onion as viewed with the eye. Then slice a green onion lengthwise and make a drawing of the area near its base, as viewed through a 5X hand lens.

In 'Who Am I?', students guess the identity of life forms whose picture are pinned on their backs. They do this by asking other students about the life form's traits and characteristics. In 'What's In The Bag', students practice some of the learning processes that scientists use to discover and learn about the world, through a guessing game.

Some of these science activities can also be done at home, for kids who have simple microscopes. Others could be done as party games for older kids.
