SETI@HOME SCREENSAVER

SETI@home is a scientific experiment that harnesses the power of hundreds of thousands of Internet-connected computers in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). Participate by running a free program that downloads and analyzes radio telescope data. There's a small but captivating possibility that your computer will detect the faint murmur of a civilization beyond Earth.

The program asks for a nickname and e-mail address, to create an account for you. This lets SETI notify you in case you discover ET. The SETI@home application downloads blocks of data through the Internet, looks for orderly patterns that might be artificial, returns the results, and gets another block of data. It asks your permission to connect to the net. The application is represented by a green radio telescope icon.

The screensaver program runs when you haven't used your keyboard or mouse for a while. It displays color pictures showing the data analysis process. The application processes data only when the screensaver is running, unless you give permission for it to process data all the time. There is lots of fascinating information on the project at the SETI site, including project background, a technical explanation of the screensaver graphics, and a recording of radio signals from space!
