Description:

SIGMA CHESS is a sophisticated chess program that can be played at a range of levels, including 'Absolute Beginner'.

The appearance of the chess board and pieces can be customized, including both 2 and 3 dimensional boards (the freeware version has only one 3D board). I prefer the 3D board, but my 8 year old always chooses 2D. Playing levels range from novice to tournament - at the novice levels the chess program will make occasional blunders! Pick Leisure level and the game is not timed.

Looking for an easy game? Choose one of the Novice levels and give the computer a Handicap (this reduces the game's thinking time), so that it will not play quite as well. Without the handicap, there is usually a delay while the computer is thinking about its next move. Set its playing style - Normal, Aggressive, Defensive, or the fun styles - Desperado and Chicken. In Desperado, the game focusses on attacking your king. In Chicken, it only wants to defend its own. These styles are easier to beat!

To play the game, simply drag a piece to its new position. Not sure of the rules - the Alt key shows all the legal moves for any piece. Hint gives the computer's thoughts on your best move. Take back moves using Undo and Redo, and if the computer is still winning, Change Sides!

An online manual explains the menus and commands, and includes annotated games. It can also be downloaded from the Sigma Chess home page.

For a more sophisticated player there are many Playing Levels including Novice,Tournament, Blitz, Average time, Fixed Depth, Analysis and Mate Finder. Computer Annotations are provided - the program annotates entire games with its own analysis. Endgame Databases result in perfect play for the following endgames: KPK, KQK, KQKR and KBNK. An Annotation Editor allows entry of annotation text. Game Collections can contain numerous games, and the built-in collection browser and database search facilities allow selection of games that are of interest.
