Learn to type with the TEN THUMBS TYPING TUTOR. It teaches touch-typing (typing with all fingers without looking at the keys) via a series of lessons, focussing on subsets of the keys. Included are 2 games, Safari Park and Brick Factory, that incorporate keyboard practice in a fun game format. Tests are available for experienced touch typists to increase speed and accuracy. Both Qwerty and Dvorak keyboard layouts are supported, and a keyboard on the screen helps to avoid looking down at the keys as you type. Ten Thumbs starts with a questionnaire on user preferences, e.g. the objective to be reached in words per minute, and the length of each lesson. It provides an excellent tutorial on how to sit properly at the keyboard. Its lessons require practice in typing, with lines to be entered like 'jads fadds'. Errors are highlighted in red and there is a written comment on progress. A finger placement lesson is given for each new key, followed by a practice session, incorporating that key with those already learned. The user interface in this part is not always obvious - when in doubt press the 'Next' button! A section on 'Extra Practice' allows for practicing of worst keys, gives reminders on fingering, and allows specification of keys or importing of text for additional practice. 'History' shows the keys learned so far, and the speed and accuracy achieved. In the game 'Safari Park', type in the letters quickly to close the gates to the crocodile and turtle enclosures, before they can attack! Enter a letter sequence on each falling brick in 'Brick Factory' before it hits the conveyer belt. If the pile of discarded bricks gets too high, disaster follows. Serious about learning touch-typing? Ten Thumbs will give good instruction and feedback on progress, and suggest ways to improve performance. The 'Safari Park' and 'Brick Factory' games are more engaging, for reinforcement. They are also a good vehicle for kids to practice general skills and speed with keyboard entry.
