EDUCAST is a free software program that delivers information (such as education news, Internet resources, lesson plans, math and science galleries) directly to your computer. Lesson plans are presented in categories: K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12. General News is updated every hour. There are weekly updates of education news and professional information, current event activities, math items and lesson plans. When you start the program you decide whether updates should be initiated manually or automatically, and (for the latter) on what schedule. Updates can take a few minutes and it took a few tries to get the first one. Click on Channel and select one from: News, Lesson Plans, Current Event Activities, Education News or Professional Information, Interest Groups, Math and Science Galleries, Marketplace and USA Today. Each channel has sub-categories within it. I looked at Lesson Plans for grades 3-5 and found 2 pages including an "Oh, Mayan" math activity, one in science on what whales like to eat, and "Two Thumbs Up" on writing book reviews. The initial set of contents is impressive and there is also a searchable database of lesson plans on the Educast site. This is a wonderful resource both for busy teachers and for parents who are home schooling, or who want to reinforce aspects of the curriculum at home!
