Description:
WATCHING OVER OUR PLANET FROM SPACE This is an education kit aimed at ages 11 to 15, though teachers may find some activities suitable for younger children. It includes 59 pages of hands-on activities (in color) about monitoring the Earth's environment using remote sensing. An English version is also available. It starts with an introduction to remote sensing - what can be seen in a satellite image, who uses remote sensing and why - followed by 12 activites. These cover a variety of remote sensing applications (set in Canada) and include questions, along with images to be studied to obtain the answers. Activities include monitoring a logging operation, measuring the motion of an oil slick, or navigating a ship through ice. There is additional tutorial information on remote sensing, and appendices which explain how to use a compass, cartesian coordinates and a dot grid (to measure area). This is a LARGE download - 12.5 MB (takes approx 35 minutes using a phone line and a 56.6 K modem) - but it can be downloaded in either 1 or 3 parts. This is a free download, but they would like feedback on circumstances in which the kit was used, whether it was a successful learning experience, and suggestions for improvements. This is a fascinating resource, either for the classroom or for use at home by anyone interested in understanding how remote sensing is used to monitor our environment!
