Description:

Frizzy the Frog will help kids learn basic phonics in three steps: Learn, Watch and Play. In the Learn mode, kids choose which letter of the alphabet they want to learn about. The letter is displayed along with a picture and the name of the picture. The word can be sounded out or spoken by placing the cursor over the area. The Watch mode presents several phonics puzzles and then plays a video sequence along with a poem - these are downright wacky and fun to watch. The Play mode has a number of games designed to reinforce phonics awareness.

Technical Aspects:

We ran this program on an iMac with a G3, 350MHz processor and 64M RAM. We experienced a bit of choppy audio and the program froze at one point. The interface was adequate but inconsistent in that some areas use a trash can to quit and others use another icon.

Report and Conclusions:

We liked the Learn and Watch section much better than the Play area because the games there have been done before - a Coloring Book, repeating sound sequences, a spelling game and others.

I do feel that this program could be of value for students needing remedial phonics instruction as well as for those beginning to learn letter sounds.
