Description:

Ready to blast off? Cosmic Reading Journey was designed for 2nd and 3rd graders to offer an integrated reading comprehension and vocabulary program. Choose from 100 children's book titles ranging from older classics to new releases and have the child read the book (you do have to have the book on hand) before they choose a planet to visit.

Once on the planet, they'll need to check out 'New Words' first and after that can complete other activities. Activities include a crossword puzzle, an essay question, multiple-choice questions and classification of words (as nouns, adverbs, adjectives, verbs) and offers practice identifying synonyms, antonyms or homophones. After a section is completed, the test score is revealed, and if a child doesn't score at least 80%, it must be re-done. I noticed that when re-testing, some different questions are added in so kids aren't just answering the same ones over and over.

Features:

  • Wide range of reading choices.
  • Children can work at their own pace.
  • Ability to print reports on all students.
  • Helps build reading comprehension skills.

Technical Aspects:

We had no problems with installation or during runtime on a PowerBook with a G3 processor and 128M RAM. The graphics are spaced out fun and the guide is a cute little guy in a space suit. The Teacher's Guide printouts are excellent and will help facilitate the work in the classroom.

Report and Conclusions:

Sunburst has done an amazing job using books that are readily available in classrooms or libraries. I was surprised to realize that we own about half of the books already! This program will integrate beautifully into classroom or homeschool settings and could be used for remedial tutoring.

My 8 year old daughter, Annie, has recently joined our homeschool setting and one of the things I discovered was that despite her A's in the public school, her reading comprehension isn't what it should be. We'll be using this program to correct that situation.
