Description:

The Digital Field Trip to the Rainforest is an educational program designed to teach the viewer about the ecosystems of different types of rainforests. It includes a field trip to the Blue Creek Rainforest Reserve in Belize, information on other rainforests and a study of the mechanisms and interdependencies of plants and animals.

Upon starting the program, you are given several options of browsing the material offered, such as taking the Field Trip to Belize, studying the rainforest and learning about the forest mechanisms and endangered rainforests. There is a wealth of information here on how the ecosystems of the rainforest are intertwined, such as the relationship of animals to each other and to the plants around them. You can learn about how gaps in the canopy invite the growth of plants that need the sun, how animals use mimicry of other species to avoid being eaten, and special characteristics of plants and animals that enable them to survive in the different seasons of the rainforest. (Note: the school version is available for $100.00 US)

Features:

  • Field trip to Belize
  • Rainforest ecosystems
  • Botany
  • Biology
  • Facts on Blue Creek's plants and animals
  • Student workbook with School version

Technical Aspects:

I had no problem installing this software and the program ran very well. The interface was simple and easy, with a pull-down menu available at all times and a back-cursor for going back one screen.

Report and Conclusions:

This is an excellent supplement to a study of rainforests, or to general studies of ecology or biology. I wouldn't use it as a stand-alone product, though, because while it does a great job of presenting many facts about the rainforest, there are still some things left out, especially on other rainforests besides the one in Belize. Ecosystems and forest mechanisms are the program's strongest points, while facts on individual plants and animals are the weakest. The only pictures/videos of wildlife were the ones in the Blue Creek Reserve, and not enough of those (I'm a sucker for National Geographic).

There is also a student workbook (School edition) that is very comprehensive in its content. There are indepth questions on material covered, as well as questions that require further branching out, using the knowledge learned as a sprinboard. Used with other materials, The Digital Field Trip to the Rainforest can be a good asset to any classroom.
