Description:

Elmer's Cut and Build 3D is a program that lets the child design and build 3D castles and houses, print out the designs and even fly a helicopter! The interface is a flight control panel with a control on the left for printing and a control on the right for choosing different shapes and sizes of the pieces.

Everything is brightly colored and the actual flying around is lots of fun. When the program first begins, the helicopter flies over the section picked and adds a wall to the outside of either the house or the castle. These two sections are located on a desert island where the scenery is vividly colored in bright blues and greens. After selecting either a house or castle the kids can then select which portion to print and build first. The house can be as big or as small as the child wants and has everything necessary to design a house from the kitchen sink to the cars they drive. The house is divided up into sections with each section being a different room of the house, and the kids can also select which portion of the room they want to create or they can select the whole room. Each portion can be resized separately; for instance, say the child wants a big screen television instead of a 19-inch. The child goes to the living room or the playroom, selects the television, then resizes it to be as big as he/she wants. There is a section for the playground, the garage, the stainless steel kitchen and the patio area outside complete with reclining lawn chairs, plus plants ranging from small bushes to large trees for the landscaping aspect.

The castle section functions in the same manner as the house area, and has everything needed to build the biggest castle in the kingdom or the smallest Tudor home, with additions ranging from windmills to courtyards. There is even a courtyard vendor selling fruits and vegetables. These sections are designed so the kids can use their imaginations to build a full residential area, or the largest kingdom around with living quarters for everyone from the maid to the queen.

Features:

  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Print and build 3D models
  • glitter

Technical Aspects:

Installation was fairly simple with no problems, but it takes a while so be patient. You really need to disable any screen savers you have to avoid interruption during the program. Printing any and all pages in this program is a very slow and drawn out process.

Report and Conclusions:

Well, at first glance this seemed like a mom's answer to the rainy day blues! But most of the buildings are BIG print jobs and if your printer is a slow printer the children will be disinterested by the time they finish printing. On average the buildings and assorted projects range from 6 to 19 pages long. The cover stated that this is designed for ages 6-12....well, I will bet the farm that six year olds will not be able to cut out the buildings or even glue the tiny things together by themselves. My thirteen year old was bored with this quickly and my nine year old was disinterested before we were even through the second building. It is tedious work and a long, drawn-out process. We played with this program while we were iced in and the kids had moved on to something else before I had a chance to turn around! Also, do not print the areas without textures, as this helps in figuring out where they go. Only print one instruction sheet, they don't change for each building.

This program would be easier for the children if they would increase the size of the buildings slightly and change the age limit to 8-13. They also need to change the liquid glue provided to a glue stick, because it's easier to handle and a lot less messy.
