Description:

The Learning Company has bundled together seven older programs that are targeted toward the middle school student. Typing, Report Writing, Multilingual Dictionary, Art, Algebra, Science and Language Arts are represented in this compilation of skill practice software.

Algebra Smart - A nice algebra program that is presented in the familiar style of The Princeton Review. Included are lessons with teen tutors, a glossary of math terms, practice questions and quiz-style algebra problems. The tone of the program is just right for teens, but the algebra games in the quiz show may be intimidating to those who don't like timers.

Artrageous - Play with art in this light approach to famous artists and their works. Users can learn about color and its history and symbolism, different techniques of artists, and a little about certain famous paintings. A larger "art room" of paintings would have been better, but the works shown, along with tutorials about the paintings, still make for a nice presentation.

Word Smart - Enrich your vocabulary in a movie script setting.

Slam Dunk Typing - Play basketball while learning how to type!

Science Sleuths - Basic science principles are learned through experiments conducted in a lab while solving a mystery. A good way to have fun with science, but not much replay value.

Multi-Lingual Talking Picture Dictionary - A dictionary of English, Spanish, German and French words, with pictures and pronunciations. Included are three games to practice the words.

Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia 1999 - A comprehensive reference tool complete with articles, multimedia pictures, a planetarium, an atlas, web links and a timeline. A clean interface makes finding information painless, and there is also a handy report writing section with a presentation maker, Wordpad and Notepad.

Technical Aspects:

All the programs installed easily without any problems. As these games are of older vintage, the graphics on the whole are nothing to get excited about, but still are quite satisfactory.

Report and Conclusions:

This program is exactly what it says it is: a collection of software on different subjects that are pertinent in middle school. Most of the programs are solid, educationally sound learning tools (although I wish that middle school software compilations would also include a basic math program, along with the Algebra), with my favorites being Algebra Smart, Science Sleuths, Slam Dunk Typing and Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia 1999. This is a great tool for home study or homeschool, and the price is unbeatable!
