Description:

School Zone has introduced a new line of electronic workbooks that come with a CD-ROM as well as a printed workbook. Transitional Math K-1 has simple instructions, games for recess (after completing two exercises) and gives kids instant feedback on their performance. The workbook is 32 pages of practice, reinforced by the CD-ROM, which randomizes the workbook pages on the computer.

Features:

  • Easy to use
  • Bright, colorful workbook pages
  • Personalized printouts
  • Instant grading

Technical Aspects:

We tried this program on 3 machines: a Pentium III - 500, a Pentium II - 300 and an iMac DV Special. It ran without problem on all three machines. The sounds on the CD-ROM add to the fun, and the graphics are all bright, cartoon-like. You may also print out personalized practice pages, so once the workbook is finished, the CD-ROM program can be used to create more pages.

Report and Conclusions:

Finally, a math program that clicks with my 6 year old son! He's already zipped through the workbook and is very proud of himself. I really liked that once the workbook is done, the program can still be used to print worksheets if needed. My son seems to respond better to this type of practice than to other programs we've tried, and we'll be watching to see what else School Zone produces. This program would be useful in the classroom or homeschool settings and incorporates a nice balance of work and fun.
