Description:

Uncle Albert was an eccentric, but brilliant gentleman who left behind a wondrous album filled with mysteries, puzzles and surprises. When you open the album, you'll meet Tom, a spunky little creature who was mistakenly left inside by Uncle Albert. To free Tom, you will have to find the hidden treasure by solving the album's mysteries - search for items within its pages, replace missing photos, unlock secret doors, capture insects and even build a rocket ship to fly to a distant planet!

Experimentation and problem-solving skills are the keys to this title. Because of the its unique non-linear navigation, children can move through the game at their own pace. Problems do not need to be solved in a particular order to progress. Can't unravel a mystery? That's OK, just skip it and go on to another challenge. The solution will likely present itself later on.

Features:

  • Focuses on science, logic, observation, reflection and memory skills
  • Non-linear navigation provides multiple paths
  • Infinite solutions
  • Save up to 8 individual games
  • Many worlds to explore: backyard, science lab, space station, Egypt, pond and more
  • Lots of creepy-crawly critters

Technical Aspects:

This title loaded and ran with no problems on a Celeron 400 with 32 MB RAM. The interface is very easy to use and navigate within.

The graphics and audio are excellent. No cartoons here - the scrapbook and objects look very realistic. The visual aspect of the pages is reminiscent of the sketches and journals of Leonardo DaVinci. The music has a lovely ambiance that encourages relaxation and reflection. Voices are clear and easy to understand. However, there are audio clues that would make it difficult for a hearing-impaired child to play.

The box reflects the game quite well, although it may look more appealing to boys, because of the insects, spaceships, etc. - but I think it would be equally appealing to girls once they try it. Adults who enjoy puzzles should love this game as well. I know I sure do!

Report & Conclusions:

My 9-year-old son and I both adore Uncle Albert's Magical Album! At first, my son was a bit put off by the introductory film and he was disappointed that the album was found automatically (he wanted to look around in the attic and find it himself). However, once he opened the album and began to explore, he was captivated.

There are so many wonderful things to do in this album! It encourages children to take their time, explore and experiment. The charming, nostalgic feel of the game creates a sense of comfort and ease. The challenges range in difficulty from simply finding an item or creature to solving elaborate puzzles. The unique interface allows the player to go along at his/her own pace, moving back and forth between the pages and challenges as needed to find solutions. One of my favorite aspects of the game are the "living, intelligent" creatures. Insects, frogs, even a mouse move about randomly on the pages as if they were real. You can move them from page to page and they will always stay on the page where you left them, but beyond that you never know when they will appear or what they will do.

Both my son and I have played this game a great deal. Neither of us has found the hidden treasure yet, but it's because we're really in no hurry. We're having too much fun playing! This game is an excellent example of the journey being much more important (and enjoyable) than the destination! :D
