backcountry - a term used to describe extremely remote areas

backpack - container for camping supplies that is carried on the back

camp - v. to pitch a tent n. an area of temporary shelters

campfire - an outdoor fire

compass - a device for determining direction

conservation - the act of protecting natural resources

dendrology - the study of trees and shrubs

ecology - interaction between animals and their environment

elevation - height; find this on a topographic map to show the terrain

field guide - resource book for studying in the wild

fire ring - a circle of dirt or stones built for safety around an outdoor fire

filter - smart hikers do this to water to remove harmful bacteria

fire - a chemical reaction that releases heat

granola - rolled oats mixed with fruit or seeds

map - a paper that leads the way

pack - v. put belongings into a container for transportation n. a sack on your back

phosphorus - a chemical that helps to start a fire

ranger - a person who works to take care of a park and offer information to visitors

rope - a length of twisted fiber that can be used as lifesaving equipment

scout - v. to search or explore n. a good person or member of the Boy or Girl Scouts

sleeping bag - a warm bedroll created specifically for sleeping in the wilderness

tent - a movable shelter used in the woods

terrain - the lay of the land

topography - the physical features of a place or region

trail - a beaten track or blazed path

water - a liquid compound essential for human life and a necessary element for hiking

wilderness - an unsettled region of land
